✈Driving Ireland~Wild Atlantic Way: A road full of adventure Vol.6 『Wallup!Road to King of Bodhrán,Malachy Kearns 』~ Roundsone/Clifden Majestic Connemara's Coast #Ireland ✈

Malachy Kearns is Ireland's King of bodhran maker.Better known as "Malachy Bodhran," his company, Roundstone Musical Instruments, in Co. Galway, was set up over 30 years ago in the picturesque fishing village of Roundstone on the shores of Connemara.

The bodhran (pron. bow-rawn), is one of Ireland's oldest musical instruments. The translation of this Gaelic word means "deaf" or "haunting." A bodhran is traditionally an 18-inch single-sided drum, with a frame of Irish beechwood and a tautly-stretched Irish goatskin, a very tough material with its all-important and energetic "bounce back" to give the required sound when struck with a two-headed wooden beater known as a "cipin'," the Irish word for "little stick." The bare hand can also be used. With proper treatment these drums should hold their tension for a lifetime.

He has made special stage drums for the hugely successful show, "Riverdance."and Monster film “Titanic”  performing "An Irish Party in Third Class"by Celtic band Gaelic Storm.

Roundstone -  a picturesque 19th Century Coastal Village with a lovely Harbour and The 12 Bens as a back-drop. Location for several movies – including ‘The Mackintosh Man’, ‘Into the West’ & more recently ‘The Matchmaker.

Malachys wife Gifty Lawson Kearns also gave me a hearty welcome.
