Media Advisory: Japanese earthquake update
As of 13.00 hrs this afternoon there have been no reports of any Irish casualties following the earthquake in Japan.
The Consular Crisis Centre of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Embassy in Tokyo have been able to account for almost all of the Irish nationals believed to have been in the affected areas. They continue to try to make contact with a small number of others who remain on our list as communication links are restored.
The Department’s Crisis Centre is continuing to offer assistance and advice to families in Ireland who may have concerns about relatives in Japan. The Centre will remain operational and can be contacted at (01) 4182033 or through (01) 4082000 after 6.00pm. Irish nationals in Japan can contact the Irish Embassy in Tokyo at +81 332 630695.
Irish nationals in areas impacted by the disaster are advised to closely monitor and follow the advice of the local authorities. There has been an explosion at a nuclear plant in Okuma town in Fukushima prefecture. There is an evacuation order in place for a 20km area around the plant. The Department of Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to this area.
The most serious damage has been localised in the Sendai area where communication lines remain down. There has been an improvement in the situation in Tokyo with transport links and communication largely restored Narita International Airport is operating on a very limited basis and many European Airlines have cancelled flights to Tokyo.

AN ROINN GNÓTHAÍ EACHTRACHA DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
To all Irish citizens in Japan
The Embassy of Ireland is actively monitoring the aftermath of the
recent earthquakes and aftershocks and is paying particular attention to
the situation regarding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. We
are liaising closely with the Japanese government and EU/international
partners in this regard.
Given the current situation, we are encouraging Irish citizens to
consider the necessity for their presence in the north east of Japan and
the Tokyo region (this is particularly the case for people with small
children or women who are pregnant). Those seeking to leave these areas
should make a travel reservation as soon as possible. We are not
specifically advising people to leave Japan.
The Embassy's website is updated with the latest information as it
becomes available to us as well as appropriate travel advice. This
website will remain the primary method of conveying information on the
situation to Irish nationals in Japan. The website may be accessed via
the following link: http://www.irishembassy.jp/
We are also advising Irish nationals to closely monitor the advice
provided by their local authorities.
If you are in an affected area, please contact the Embassy (if you have
not already done so) to confirm your status and location or if you
require consular assistance.
The Embassy can be reached as follows:
Landline: +81 3 3263 0695
