喜び、泣き、笑い、悲しみ・・・・・今年もアイルランドは多くの出来事がありました。
まもなく去りゆく2014年。まもなくやってくる2015年。
私たちが住んでいる、ここ日本から、はるか12000km遠く離れたミドリの国は、今どんな表情を見せているのでしょうか？
日本から飛行機でおおよそ16時間、アイルランド第二の都市コーク。
その街に何十年も居を構えている生粋のアイリッシュ、ブリジッド・デーリーからたったいま、アイルランドのクリスマス便りが届きました。
アイルランドでのクリスマスの過ごし方は様々。
ダブリンのような都市部でのクリスマスと、アラン諸島のクリスマスでは過ごし方は、それは違いましょう。
しかし、アイルランドならではの伝統、アイルランドならではの家族観は何処へ行っても普遍だと思います。
ブリジッドのクリスマス便りを翻訳家みずたにさんが早速手がけてくれました。
水谷さんのご挨拶とともに、最後にはトリニティカレッジの学生でもあり写真家でもあるブリジッドのフォトからアイルランドの表情をピックアップしてお送り致します。

アイルランド、コークでのクリスマス

アイルランドのクリスマスはいろいろな意味で特別です。それは家族と友人たちのための時間なのです。アイルランドの多くの家庭では、クリスマスの朝早く起きて真っ先にクリスマスツリーへ向かい、家族や友人、そしてもちろんサンタクロースが用意してくれたプレゼントを開きます。アイルランドではサンタクロースよりファザー・クリスマスと呼ぶのが一般的です。イエス・キリストの誕生を祝うためミサへ出向いたあとのクリスマスの朝には、おいしい朝食が欠かせません。
次に行うことは、お祈りを捧げるためセレモニーへ訪れ、お花や伝統的なホーリー・リースを大切な家族や友人のお墓へ供えます。これは古くからのアイルランドの伝統です。年齢を重ねるにつれて、私自身のアイルランドでの幼少期を振り返ると、私はこの伝統に心から感謝するようになりました。
次に行うことは、お祈りを捧げるためセレモニーへ訪れ、お花や伝統的なホーリー・リースを大切な家族や友人のお墓へ供えます。これは古くからのアイルランドの伝統です。年齢を重ねるにつれて、私自身のアイルランドでの幼少期を振り返ると、私はこの伝統に心から感謝するようになりました。
続いて家族や友人を訪問します。ギフトを交換、ミンスパイやモルドワインを少し頂いて冷えた体を温めます。
そうこうしていると(クリスマス）ディナーの時間になって食事を始めます。スターターは一般的にはスモークサーモンやエビ、スープやメロンです。続いてメインコースです。詰め物入りの七面鳥の匂いが最高、ハムや香辛料の利いたビーフがクリスマスの時期のお楽しみです。恒例の野菜はブラッセルスプラウトと一緒に、セロリ、ニンジン、サヤエンドウ、ブロッコリーが並びます。ブレッドスタッフィングへのつけ合せはローストポテト、マッシュポテト、グレービーソースや、ある時はクランベリーやブレッドソースです。デザートのお決まりはブランデーバターかシェリーソースのクリスマスプディングや、ミンスパイ、クリスマスケーキなどです。
シェリートライフルもとても人気のあるデザートです。ディナーを調理しながらクリスマスキャロルを聞いたり歌ったりするのが私のお気に入りです。最大の注意はクリスマスディナーへ注がれます。みんなアイリッシュスタイルのクリスマスを故郷で過ごすため、世界中から帰ってくるからです。ディナーの後はテレビを見ながら少しゆっくりします。それからボードゲームやカードゲーム、イブニングエコーの ホーリー・バウを読みます。多くの家庭がクリスマスの夜にパーティーなどの集まりを楽しむ一方、家族との時間をリラックスしてゆっくり楽しむ家庭もあります。

アイルランドの伝統で、「レン狩りの日」の催しが12月26日のセント・スティーブンスン・デイに祝われます。レン（ミソサザイ）は行く年を象徴し、ロビン（コマドリ）は来る年を象徴しています。子供たちは顔に炭を塗り、大きなホーリーの枝を持って朝5時30分に近所を周ります。レン・ソングを歌いながら玄関のドアにホーリーの枝をたたきつけます。子供たちは家の者が小さなブリキの缶にお金を入れてくれるまでその家を離れません
「レン、レン、全ての鳥の王様が、セント・スティーブンスデイにハリエニシダの木に捕まった♪ケトルで追い上げてフライパンでやっつける、どうかレンをレンを退治するためにお金を頂戴♪」

シーズンの最終週には、子供であった私でさえ、行く年を送り、新年を迎えるという、入り混じった感情を覚えました。大晦日はアイルランドでその年の最後の日です。子供たちは出来る限り多くの教会を訪れ、小屋からワラを取って祈祷書のしおりとして取っておきます。
大晦日の夜には、家庭では前年に亡くなった故人を偲ぶため、ディナーに席を用意し、ドアの掛け金を開けておきます。私はこの事をとても良く覚えています。当時はとても幼かったのですが、ある大晦日の夜に食事をしていると、ドアが風邪で開きました。父は開いたドアを見てこういったのです。
「中に入ってお座りなさい」
「中に入ってお座りなさい」
ドアの外には誰もいなかったので、私たちは皆で笑いましたが、まるで誰かが座ったように椅子がきしむ音が聞こえたのです！父は振り向いて私たちに言いました。「ディナーを食べにきたゴーストだ！」
私はとても怖かったです。私はこの慣習を決して忘れないでしょうし、万が一でも使わないでしょうね！

Christmas in Ireland is very special in
many ways. It is a time for family and friends. Christmas morning in many homes
in Ireland include getting up early and heading straight to the Christmas tree
to open the presents that have been put there by family and friends and of
course father Christmas more commonly known as 'Santa' in Ireland. A good Irish
breakfast is a must on Christmas morning followed by going to mass to celebrate
the birth of Jesus Christ.
Next on the list is visiting the cemetery to say a few prayers and placing flowers or a traditional holly wreath on the graves of dearly beloved family and friends .This is an age old Irish tradition. As I have grown older and look back on my Irish childhood I have come to fully appreciate this tradition . Afterwards we call to see family and friends and exchange gifts as well as having a few mince pies and a nice mulled wine or a tipple or two to warm you up after the cemetery.

The smell of the stuffed turkey, ham and spiced beef are a favourite at
Christmas time. The traditional vegetable is brussel sprouts along with celery,
carrots, peas, and broccoli. Accompanied by bread stuffing, roast potatoes,
mashed potatoes, gravy and sometime cranberry or bread sauce. Popular choices
for desert is Christmas pudding with brandy butter or sherry sauce, mince pies
or just a slice of Christmas cake. A sherry trifle is also a very common
dessert.
Listening and singing along to Christmas
carols while cooking the dinner is a favourite of mine. Major attention is
giving to the Christmas dinner as people travel home from all parts of the
world to spend time at home enjoying Christmas Irish style. After dinner we
have a short rest and watch a little TV. followed by board games or a game of
cards and a read of the Evening Echo — Holly Bough. While many homes have
parties and gatherings on Christmas night others just like to relax and enjoy
the family time together.
Irish tradition holds 'Hunt the Wren Day'
(Irish: Lá an Dreoilín) is celebrated on 26th December, St. Stephen's Day. The
Wren bird symbolizes the old year, while the robin symbolizes the year to come.
As children we would rub coal on our faces and have a large holly branch and go
around to the neighbours houses at 5.30am in the morning, singing and beating
the holly branch on their front door as we sang the Wren song .We wouldn't
leave until they gave us some money in
our little tin can.

birds,
On St. Stephen's Day was caught in the
furze;
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
Pray give us a penny to bury the
wren."

In the last week of the season, even as a
child I could feel the mixed emotions of leaving behind an old year and
welcoming the new. New Year's Eve (Oíche Chinn Bliana) is the last day of the
year in Ireland. As children on this night we would visit as many churches as
possible to look at the cribs and take a piece of straw from each one and save
it in our prayer books as book marks . On New Year’s night, families would
remember those who had passed away the previous year by setting a place for
them at the dinner table and leaving the door unlatched .I remember this so
well. I was very young at the time and as we were eating one New Year’s night
the door blew open and my father looked at the open door and said ,come in and
sit down. We all laughed because there was nobody there .. until we heard the
squeaking noise of the chair as if someone had sat down! my father turned to us
and said, that's a ghost who came for dinner! I was so terrified I'll never
forget that tradition and one I don't use, just in case !!

みなさん、こんにちは！水谷じゅんじです。
おかげさまで2014年最後の原稿を書き終えることができました！
この原稿を書く前に毎年恒例の餅つきが仲間内であったのですが、年々みんなの餅つきスキルが上がってきており、去年にも増しておいしいお餅が出来上がりました＾＾（おかげで腕と腰が悲鳴をあげていますが…）
さて、今年の漢字は「税」と発表されましたが、私にとって2014年を象徴する漢字は「生」です。5月に娘が生まれ、今までの生活とがらりと変わりましたし、どんな家に引っ越したいのか、といった人生設計というものをより意識するようにもなりました。
今年の大きなイベントの一つとして、このThe Irish Todayブログに今年から関わらせていただいたことも挙げられます。アイルランドの留学がきっかけで翻訳者として働き始め、またアイルランドに関わる仕事ができたことはとても嬉しいことでした。
今回のテーマはクリスマスということでしたが、私のアイルランドでのクリスマスはというと、語学学校時代のホストマザーや当時WWOOF先だったオーナー家族のディナーに招いてもらい、楽器を演奏したり一緒に歌を歌ったりと、楽しい時間を過ごさせていただきました。なによりも嬉しかったのは、クリスマスという大切な日に私を家族のように温かく迎え入れてくれたことです。
アイルランドを訪れることを訪愛と呼んだりしますが、いろいろな人の愛にふれることが出来る素晴らしい国だからなのかも知れませんね。
